As mentioned, one of the roles of the cytoskeleton is in movement. The cytoskeleton is involved both in moving things around inside the cell and in moving the cell itself. This is a fascinating area of biophysics. The cytoskeleton generates forces for movement through the polymerization (or depolymerization) process. As residues are added to or removed from one end of a cytoskeleton fiber, then as the fiber grows or shrinks, it pushes or pulls whatever is attached to the other end. So, for example, if a part of the membrane is attached to the other end, the cytoskeleton can generate the forces needed to bend the membrane during endocytosis.
